Promoting the New Craft Beer Craze at California Cafe - Palo Alto

(San Francisco) January 27, 2012 - In 1971, Electronic News published a series entitled “Silicon Valley in the USA,” a weekly tabloid dedicated to news about the growing tech companies in the valley between San Francisco and San Jose. The phrase “Silicon Valley” became synonymous with Santa Clara Valley as more and more tech companies built their roots in the area; and with the internet boom in the early 90’s, the entire world turned their eye to the innovative region. With companies like Apple Inc., Google, Intel, Hewlett-Packard, and Facebook still headquartered in Silicon Valley, it is hard for other local businesses to compete for national attention. But with the sudden explosion of craft brewing in the Peninsula, and throughout Santa Clara Valley, I welcome “Hop Valley” as a more suitable moniker as we bring in 2012.

Beer has reinstated its popularity again in the U.S., and according to the Brewers Association, 1,927 breweries were operating for some or all of 2011 (the highest total since the 1800’s). That number seems to be growing by the month as new microbreweries and home brewers pop up throughout California, especially in the Peninsula. With so many experienced brewers leading the way, and an unprecedented amount of connoisseurs who are eager to learn, it is only a matter of time until a “Hop Valley” brewer is seen featured in Super Bowl ad alongside Anhueser Busch or MillerCoors LLC. Like the pioneers of the tech industry “Hop Valley” shows promise and innovation that cannot be found anywhere else in the world.

The second weekend in February will display this promise and innovation through the ever popular SF Beer Week, hosted by the San Francisco Brewers Guild, and although the event is centered in San Francisco, many “Hop Valley” beer enthusiasts will be excited to hear that the annual event has extended its reach out of San Francisco and into the Peninsula. SF Beer Week will feature over 19 events in the South Bay, including tours, tastings, brewing classes, and food pairings with big name participants like Devil’s Canyon Brewing Company and Gordon Biersch Brewing Company, as well as highly anticipated newcomers High Water Brewing Inc., and Strike Brewing Co. As this popular event unfolds the Peninsula is certain to assert itself as a region respected by cicerones and home brewers alike for its world class beers and its ever-growing population of micro-breweries.

In the epicenter of “Hop Valley” there is one man whose passion for food and beer far surpasses mere career aspirations. According to Peter Estaniel, author of betterbeerblog.com, “Mark Pettyjohn is one of the few chefs I’ve seen who really gets it…and it shows in his pairings and in his cuisine.” As Executive Chef of California Café in Palo Alto, Chef Mark has created pairing menus featuring such heavyweights as 21st Amendment Brewery, Anchor Brewing, and Stone Brewing Co. But for the first Brewmaster’s Dinner of 2012, in conjunction with SF Beer Week, Chef Mark wanted to do something special, something that no other restaurant in “Hop Valley” would: feature an exclusive, entirely South Bay Brewer oriented pairing dinner. On Thursday February 16th, California Café in Palo Alto will do just that by offering a 5 course meal paired with 2 different beers per course from 5 different breweries (including Tied House Brewery, Firehouse Brewery, Los Gatos Brewing Company, Strike Brewing Co., and Palo Alto Brewing Company.) With the experience of last year’s similar event hosted at California Café in Palo Alto, and the unmatched passion for food and beer Chef Mark displays in his pairings, this year’s dinner will certainly be an experience to remember.

A Look Back on 2011

As we usher in the New Year we want to take a moment and thank you, our guest, for making everything that happened in 2011 so memorable. Your support, positive affirmation, generosity, and loyalty have helped our restaurant become a popular place not only to eat, but to celebrate and gain a new experience on what it truly means to “feed the senses!”

Our Brewmaster’s Dinners were by far the most popular events in 2011 and it all started in February when Chef Mark Pettyjohn surprised everyone during San Francisco Beer Week by pairing 2 different peninsula beers per course during the 5 course meal. Will he do the same pairing in 2012? Rumors from the kitchen have been making their way into the dining room that the same San Francisco Beer Week Dinner is scheduled for the 16th of February. Anchor Brewing Company, 21st Amendment, Half Moon Bay Brewing Company, and Stone Brewing Co. rounded out the rest of the year with great success.

A new introduction to 5 Bite Fridays seemed put a smile on everyone’s face this year as we not only featured a different winery each week, but also different breweries and liquors. Stone brewing Co. was the first beer inspired 5 Bite event, featuring the ever-popular Arrogant Bastard Ale paired with a roast pork loin over risotto and a cola-maple glaze. Not to be outdone, we also introduced the Bar Masters Liquid Therapy 5 Bite event featuring recipes created by California Café – Palo Alto Staff like the Lavender Martini made with handpicked lavender from right outside our restaurant. We have yet to announce our first 5 Bite Friday partner, but we do know that we push the envelope to pair food and drinks you never thought possible!

Several hundred of you joined us to celebrate two different community events and helped our restaurant give back as we celebrate local business’ and charities. Being invited to take part in the Lucille Packard Children’s Hospital’s 20th Anniversary event was an honor, and being able to support the Palo Alto Auxiliary for Children through their Restaurants with Heart program allowed Chef Mark Pettyjohn to inspire your pallet with fresh Salmon, Vegetarian Risotto, and Salmon Tartare. Our donation will help further the already extremely successful research being done. We hope you will join us in 2012 for the many organizations we want to support starting with the American Heart Association on February 3rd.

We are also excited to announce that our Wine Fair will become an annual event featuring even more wines from Sonoma and Napa to Santa Cruz and even San Diego! After seeing the success of last year we can’t wait to hold special events like the Wine Fair, Ho-Down, and the Salsa Night! We would especially like to thank Vera Quiano for teaching our guests Salsa while Murril Gash from Jimador Tequila poured tastings alongside our salsa and taco bars.

2011 was a great year and we only have you to thank for it. Your increasing support is why we all do what we do. So from the Managers, Chefs, Front of House, Heart of House, and our entire staff at California Café – Palo Alto…HAPPY NEW YEAR! We look forward to feeding your senses as you connect with the people you care about in our relaxing environment during 2012.
